Propane Safety Inspections: One of Three Keys to Propane Safety in Your Home

Posted: July 19, 2017

Propane is a safe, effective and efficient fuel for your home heating and home comfort systems. But like any energy source, propane requires proper care to operate equipment safely.

Here are three keys to keeping your home safe if you have propane appliances:

  1. Know how to detect a leak – and how to respond if you do. Propane leaks can smell like rotten eggs. Teach your family to recognize the smell. If you smell a leak:
    • Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire.
    • Leave the house immediately and call 911 from a friend or neighbor’s house at a safe distance from your own.
    • As you leave the house, do not touch any electrical outlets or light switches.
  1. Install propane leak and CO detectors – Strongly consider installing propane leak and carbon monoxide detectors. They are inexpensive and available at most hardware stores.
  2. Get propane safety inspections and regular maintenance for your propane appliances! Have your propane system inspected and serviced regularly! Inspections can spot small issues before they become more serious problems. If you suspect your propane appliance has been damaged, get it repaired immediately!
